All regulated water
samples must be tested within two hours of receipt.
This page offers information needed by individuals taking part in
the sampling process and/or the transporting process. Extra sample
containers will need to be filled. Time and temperature constraints
exist for water samples. Click on the type of water for more
specific testing information.
“Holding-time” is defined by the duration of time it takes from the
sampling of the water, to the sample set-up at the testing lab. This
is the total time it takes to sample, transport, receive in the lab,
and begin to analyze. Included with each type of water is the
appropriate holding time.
Drinking Water
Drinking water samples must have temperature and chlorine levels
recorded at the time of sampling. Samples that take one hour or
longer to be received in the lab (after sampling) must be kept cold
during transport. This is documented by measuring the temperature,
upon receipt, of the samples. One container will be sacrificed, or
used as a temperature check sample. This container will be included
with the samples (and filled as if a sample), but upon receipt in
the lab, will be analyzed for temperature. Temperature on receipt
for these samples must be <10°C.
Holding-time for DW is 30 hours (to accommodate mail-ins), but
samples must be tested on the same day they are received in the lab.
Recreational/Surface
Water
Holding-time for recreational water is 8 hours.
Wastewater
Holding-time for wastewater is 6 hours.
