Total Organic Carbon

Ultra-pure Water Analysis:  ASSAYS

TOC (Total Organic Carbon)

The test measures the amount of oxidizable carbon in the water (excluding carbon dioxide and carbonates). Oxidizable carbon is usually leachate from leaves and other dead plant material. Other sources are leachate from PVC pipes, solvents used to bond the PVC or from contaminated well water. Bacteria, though definitive Organic Carbon, are rarely in ultapure water at levels high enough to be a major portion of the measured TOC (0.002-10 %). A high sensitivity TOC analyzer which uses ultraviolet light or ultraviolet light and persulfate to breakdown the organics to carbon dioxide is used to measure organic levels in purified water. The measurement of the carbon dioxide is effected by conductivity or by infrared spectrometry.
